Building a Winter Emergency Kit for Your Car

A winter emergency kit is essential for the vehicle of anyone hitting the roads this holiday season, whether you’re headed across town or multiple states away. If you haven’t created a winter emergency kit for your car or you want to inventory what you have to check for the essentials, here is what every winter vehicle kit should include.

What to Include in Your Winter Emergency Kit

  1. Snow Shovel: A snow shovel can help you to dig out your vehicle if you are stuck or, at the very least, help you to prevent your car from being trapped or buried underneath snow until you are able to get help.

  2. Windshield Scraper and Brush: A scraper and brush can help to knock off snow from your car and clear hazardous ice from your windshield, so you don’t have to wait for your car to defrost the window to get on the road.

  3. Tire Chains: If you are driving in heavy snow conditions, tire chains can help to increase the traction of your tires and stop your vehicle from sliding on the road. Depending on where you live and where you are traveling, there may be local regulations about tire chains and their use.

  4. Battery Jump Starter: Cold weather is tough on a car battery, and do you really want to be stuck waiting for someone to come give you a jump? A portable battery jump starter will get you back on the road as quickly as possible.

  5. Tactical Flashlight: Every winter emergency kit needs a bright flashlight with extra batteries that are easy to find in the dark.

  6. Water: While you might not be as thirsty in cold weather, that doesn’t mean you should drink less water. Bring bottled water or a stainless steel water bottle with you in case of an emergency.

  7. Extra Layers: Pack extra gloves, hats, scarves, and a blanket in your emergency kit in case you are stranded on a day where you forgot yours at home. You can also add in an extra winter coat or sweater as well.
